Star Anise also known as Badian or Chinese Star Anise is a spice native to Vietnam and Southwest China. India too produces a limited quality of Star Anise in Arunachal Pradesh. Besides cooking, Star Anise is also loved for Star Anise oil which is extensively used in perfumes, soaps, skin creams, tooth pastes and more. Though it is commonly confused with the spice Anise due to its similarity in flavour profiles, Star Anise comes from a different plant family called Schisandraceae which is an evergreen tree. Its look is eye-catching with a star shape and 8 small pockets each loaded with a seed. Star Anise is used in culinary in its ground as well as whole form. Star Anise is used in preparing the famous five-spice powder and is a favourite ingredient in the Indian masala tea powder, Chinese cuisines.
